Taiwan Chapter

你好!Welcome to the Taiwan chapter of Education 4Earth, where we focus on the environmental issues local to Taipei City and students from rural areas in Taiwan. Here’s a bit more about what we do here:

Environmental Education Program

Like the Turkmenistan chapter, our education program focuses on fundamental concepts in science and language to create a basis of understanding for local environmental challenges, one of the most significant of which is coastal pollution. We partnered with the Beyond Horizon Volunteers group to build ecology and biology curricula, which focus on species interactions, earth systems, population dynamics, as well as adaptation and evolution. We also apply these ideas to the social sciences through discussing the economic impacts of the different population dynamics in the east Asia and south Asia regions. Beyond concepts in ecology and biology, our chapter also focuses on teaching about the roots of the environmental challenge we focused on, coastal pollution, and how it stems from the unsustainable practices from the fishing industry, such as discarding used fishing nets.

The goal of our language classes is similar to that of the Turkmenistan chapter-- english isn’t something that’s fully developed in rural communities around Taiwan. This is important because it's necessary to better understand events and developments around the world. We currently have 250 members and 250 students being taught in this chapter.

Long-Term Projects

To address the coastal pollution issue, we partner with local environmental groups, as well as organize members and students to do coastal cleanups. Specifically, we are currently running a “waste art” installation project, which takes the “trash” from one of our cleanups in the SanZhi region and, with a little artistic help from our volunteers, is transformed into a piece of art that we display at a local elementary school. Currently, we are also expanding our blog to the Taiwan chapter, where we are having students write about environmental issues and experiences that have happened to them personally-- a project that we are also bringing to our other chapters.
